Japanese woodblock prints from the 1800s are a beautiful and little-understood part of the art world. Come see Instructor Kerney's collection of antique Japanese artwork, featuring pieces by Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. Kerney will explain the meaning and techniques used in the pieces in his own collection, and then speak more broadly about woodblock prints, including how they were influenced by Europe, and influenced European art in turn. Van Gogh, in particular, was fascinated by them, and directly copied several prints. Kerney will then teach you how to appraise woodblock prints, and how you can acquire authentic 200-year old prints for less than the cost of a textbook. Anyone interested in art or Japanese history will enjoy this talk.
